  • Olympic-bound archer Mark Javier is peaking just at the right time for the Beijing Olympics, his mentor Jennifer Chan said from Boe, France. “It’s hard to say. Ayaw ko siya (Javier) ma-pressure. Pero siguro we are almost there na (peak form),” Chan said of Javier, who is currently competing in the 4th leg of the Meteksan Archery World Cup in France. Chan is confident that Javier will perform well in the Mateksan tournament on account of his impressive showing in his training in FITA Middle East Archery Centre (MEAC) in Cairo, Egypt. Javier will be competing in France until June 28. “He is really doing good in his shooting skills. He is shooting more than 500 arrows a day during our training,” Chan said of the 25-year-old Javier, who is ranked 82nd in the world by FITA (International Archery Federation). When Javier is out of compe- tition, he’s doing other things to improve his mental toughness and physical conditioning.

“Our everyday schedule in Egypt revolves around improving to Saturday from 7 to 5 p.m., we focus on his shooting. At 12 noon we take our lunch and resume at 1:30 p.m.,” Chan said. “During Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays after his shooting training at 5 p.m., Mark undergoes weight training. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after 5 p.m., Mark spends his time for endurance training which involves jogging and running. And before he sleeps nag i-image and visualization training naman,” Chan added. Javier, who won silver medal in last year’s Thailand Southeast Asian Games, made it to the Olympics after topping the 32-man qualifying tournament in Xian, China in September last year.
