  • As part of its 15th anniversary celebration this year, the New York Asian Film Festival has announced the three recipients of Screen International Rising Star Asia awards.

One of them is the Philippines’ own Therese “Teri” Malvar. Teri, 15, is recognized for “daring roles that have expanded the range of contemporary Philippines’ cinema.”

These include her acclaimed film debut in the title role of Sigrid Andrea Bernardo’s lesbian drama “Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita”, where she won the 2013 CineFilipino Best Actress over no less than Superstar Nora Aunor.

Two years later, Teri won Best Actress in the 2015 Cinema One Originals film festival, this time for her role in Ralston Jover’s “Hamog,” a drama about juvenile delinquents.

In between the two films, Teri also delivered sterling performances in other independent films like Kip Oebanda’s “Tumbang Preso,” Alec Figuracion’s “Bitukang Manok,” Jet Leyco’s “Matangtubig,” and Ice Idanan’s “Sakaling Hindi Makarating” which won seven awards in this year’s edition of CineFilipino.

On her Facebook page, Teri thanked every director she has ever worked with so far in her career as well as organizers of the NYAFF who will bestow the award personally to her during the festival proper that takes place from June 22 to July 9.

The two other recipients of the Screen International Rising Star Asia awards are Japan’s Go Ayano and China’s Jelly Lin. (E. Sallan, Interaksyon)
