  • ronnie-quizonFor his portrayal of a former film cameraman turned movie pirate who records a robbery that turns viral in “Rekorder”, Ronnie Quizon was recently honored at the 2014 Barcelona International Film Festival with the El Rey Award for Excellence in Acting in a Lead Role. Ronnie, son of the late great Comedy King Dolphy, got the only win for the acclaimed filmmaking debut of Mikhail Red. “Rekorder” was originally an entry in the 2013 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival where it won Best Production Design in the New Breed category.

The psychological thriller went on to win the Special Jury Prize and Best Music award at the 31st Annonay International Film Festival in France last February.

“DANG! Ang sarap pakinggan … ang hirap paniwalaan … Thank you so much for this wonderful news and for the messages of praise, kudos and support! Mabuhay ang Pinoy!,” Ronnie posted on Facebook upon hearing the good news.

In an interview with InterAksyon last year, Ronnie revealed why he chose the young Red’s film, to be his starring debut.

“Direk Mikhail told me that they considered both Ronnie Lazaro and I for the role, since both of us fit the peg and the look of the character … I accepted the role because of two reasons. First, I thought the story was really good and worth telling. The other reason is, I have always been supportive of new artists and cool ideas, particularly those that are so very different from the usual stuff that we get to see, and ‘Rekorder’ is definitely a cool idea,” he pointed out.

The cool idea turned out to be an acclaimed one as well as the Barcelona win marks the second time “Rekorder” has been honored by an international film festival. Up next for Ronnie Quizon: an indie action drama called “Sa Ngalan ng Anak” which will reunite him with Ejay Falcon and “Dugong Buhay” directorToto Natividad. The film’s cast also includes Phillip Salvador, Carlo Aquino, Nash Aguas, Derrick Hubalde, Perla Bautista, Paul Salas, Sharlene San Pedro, Diane Medina, and John Manalo.(E. Sallan, Interaksyon)
